WEEKend preview
The concluding weekend of the regular season has arrived, marking the last games before the postseason and a final 2024 appearance for some teams in League1 BC.
Showcase opportunities
Harbourside FC have two opportunities this weekend to add to their sole Women’s Division victory, as they host TSS Rovers on Saturday and Unity FC less than 24 hours later. While the playoffs are out of reach, Harbourside can still avoid finishing bottom of the standings, and the weekend may also present a chance for their entire squad to showcase themselves on the Pro/Am stage.
It’s the same schedule for the men’s team, but they have more to play for. They currently occupy the fourth spot in the playoffs and would lock in their postseason place with victory against TSS Rovers. Two wins could see them leapfrog into third position and avoid the Rovers in the playoffs.
If they fall short against the prolific regular-season champions, it’s a duel between them and Unity for the final playoff spot on Sunday with the winner guaranteed to extend their campaign.
Last chance
Altitude FC will take part in the Men’s Division playoffs, but where they could finish in the top four is completely wide open. A win against confirmed bottom side Burnaby FC on Saturday would see them move into second place and a spot for a home semifinal, at least until Whitecaps FC Academy play later that evening,
But if Altitude lose and Harbourside win their Saturday game, Altitude are at risk of dropping to fourth on the last day of the campaign. They would then face the regular-season champions at Swangard Stadium for a place in the division’s final.
Burnaby and Altitude have already finished their Women’s Division seasons, meaning it’s all eyes on the men’s match.
Invincibles?
Whitecaps FC Girls Elite have not lost in the entire League1 BC regular season, dropping points just once – against Altitude. They have a chance to continue this streak against Rivers FC who will finish sixth in the Women’s Division whatever the result.
Meanwhile, Whitecaps FC Academy still have work to do in the Men’s Division, as a win would guarantee them a home semifinal in the playoffs and their sixth win of the campaign.
Whitecaps’ men previously defeated Rivers 2-0 back in May, but all of Rivers’ three victories have come at home this season, so it could be a more even contest that would play into Altitude’s favour.
