WEEKend preview
There are some eye-catching matchups scheduled across the long weekend; here’s a look at what’s to come.
TSS Rovers vs Altitude
Altitude FC have neither won nor lost so far in the Women’s Division this season, having tied all three of their matches. TSS Rovers FC, meanwhile, have lost their opening two games and are the only team yet to open their points account for the season.
It presents an opportunity for both sides to get their first three-point haul of the season, but if last year is anything to go by, this game will be a close encounter. The last time these sides met at Swangard Stadium in the regular season they shared the points from a goalless tie, and the next meeting at Kinsmen Field seven days later saw Rovers win a thrilling 3-2 game.
In the Men’s Division, meanwhile, TSS Rovers are the last unbeaten side having won their opening two matches. Altitude currently sit just behind them on four points, so it will be exciting to see which way this Friday-night meeting goes.
Whitecaps vs Rivers
The Whitecaps FC Girls Elite team bagged their fourth win from four games in midweek as they defeated Burnaby FC. They’ve also now scored 19 goals already this year, but meet an undefeated Rivers side that has the joint-second best defence in the Women’s Division this season.
That defence will no doubt be tested once again this year, after Rivers shipped 13 goals against Whitecaps in the 2023 regular season.
After defeating Burnaby 4-2 on Wednesday, Whitecaps FC Academy are also leading in the Men’s Division, just not as emphatically as their female counterparts. Unity FC have already proved the Vancouver side can be defeated, and Rivers – who have the same 1-1-1 record as Unity this season – will be looking to prove it again.
Altitude vs Unity
It’s a busy weekend for Altitude FC who have another matchup on Monday afternoon – Victoria Day – against Unity FC.
These two teams are hard to separate in the Men’s Division, perhaps the standout difference being that Unity have both scored and conceded double that of Altitude. When it comes to recent history, that too proves how close this game could be given they shared the points from both regular-season meetings in 2023.
In the Women’s Division, they are one point apart following Unity’s 1-1-1 record and Altitude’s three ties from their first three games. This matchup delivered a tie and a slender Unity win in the regular season last year.
