Whitecaps FC meet Unity FC

Across the two divisions, reigning champions Whitecaps Academy made an unbeaten start to the new League1 BC campaign.

The women’s team, who will feature in the new Concacaf W Champions Cup this year, opened their season with a big win over Unity at Thunderbird Stadium. A treble from Kierra Blundell, as well as further strikes from Jaime Perrault and Ashley Roberts, saw the hosts romp to a 5-1 victory; Tristan Corneil notched a consolation effort for the visitors.

The men’s team, however, had to settle for a 1-1 tie against their opposition. Unity took the lead inside the first minute through Patrick Izett, before Angelo Zhu found the equalizer for the hosts in the 29th minute; that goal proving enough for a point.

Burnaby FC welcome Harbourside FC

Like the Whitecaps Academy, Burnaby’s teams made undefeated starts to their inaugural season in League1 BC.

A brace from Isabella Muzzolini, and Raegan Mackenzie’s goal, helped their women’s side to secure a 3-1 win in their opening fixture. Erin Jensen’s finish for Harbourside was not enough to ignite a fightback from the visitors.

Burnaby Lake West would also be the home of an entertaining men’s clash which saw six goals and the points shared. Lachlan Will and Vasilios Bagiopoulos both netted braces for Burnaby and Harbourside respectively, as the game finished 3-3.

Rivers FC face Altitude FC

Rivers’ men’s and women’s teams earned four points between them in opening weekend.

Four goals were shared between the women’s side and Altitude as they played out a 2-2 tie. Taylor Miller and Ainsley Grether had put Rivers 2-0 in front at the break, before Alex Paul and Avery Tulloch completed a second-half turnaround for the visitors.

The men’s team came out on top in their fixture, however, with Hagon Kim’s goal in the 36th minute proving enough for all three points as Rivers kicked off their new men’s campaign with a win.
