WEEKLY REWIND

The penultimate week of the L1BC regular season saw a celebratory win for women’s leaders Whitecaps FC Girls Elite, and TSS Rovers wrap up top spot in the Men’s Division.

Rovers celebrate glory

With top spot there for the taking, TSS Rovers FC knew all they had to do was avoid defeat away at Rivers to seal the Men’s Division regular-season title. They did so emphatically, winning 4-2 thanks in part to another goal from Massud Habibullah, and all-but confirmed Rivers’ sixth-place finish.

Having won the regular-season, the Rovers will now feature in back-to-back TELUS Canadian Championships – a tournament in which they took the Canadian Premier League’s Pacific FC to penalties back in May.

It was also a good weekend for Rovers’ women’s side, who beat Rivers 5-2 with Jenna Baxter netting twice for the visitors who have already sealed fourth in the standings. Rivers now face the prospect of finishing bottom of the division if they fail to beat regular-season champions Whitecaps FC Girls Elite Academy and Harbourside defeat Rovers in the final match week.

Whitecaps secure playoffs

Whitecaps FC Academy have clinched the playoffs again this year, but it wasn’t a comfortable victory on Sunday as they edged past bottom-side Burnaby FC 4-3 with a Sydney Wathuta winner late in injury time.

Burnaby are now destined to finish the regular season at the bottom of the table, but they have a chance to get their second win of the campaign in the final matchweek against Altitude FC – Whitecaps’ rivals for a home semifinal in the playoffs.

The Whitecaps Girl’s Elite side, who were handed their regular-season trophy at the weekend, celebrated in style with a 4-0 win over Burnaby; Kaylee Hunter on the scoresheet once again. The win also confirmed that Burnaby will visit Unity FC in the playoff semifinals, with Whitecaps one game away from an invincible regular season.
