Weekly Rewind: Winning feeling for Nanaimo

There was a first-time winner in the Men’s Division, as Unity ensure Altitude’s Women’s Division title celebrations are put on ice.

Unity holding on

Altitude could have won the women’s title on Saturday with three points in their game and Unity dropping points elsewhere, but the latter ensured it will be a little longer before the North Vancouver side can be crowned champions. Unity won 2-1 at home to Langley after taking a two-goal lead and surviving a late scare.

The current league leaders did everything they needed to, beating TSS Rovers 1-0 away from home. Another win in their next match – at home to Altitude on Sunday – will confirm them as champions.

Elsewhere, Vancouver Rise Academy secured a 2-1 win away at Nanaimo United to continue their winning streak to seven games. Nedya Sawan opened the scoring for the visitors before Victoria Cronkhite equalized with 19 minutes remaining. Racquel Partovi restored the lead four minutes later, though, to move Vancouver onto 31 points.

The weekend also saw Burnaby and Kamloops play out a 1-1 tie in the bottom-half of the table.

Nanaimo off the mark

Nanaimo United finally earned their first win of the Men’s Division season, beating Vancouver Whitecaps Academy 3-1 thanks to three first-half goals. Following 12 games without victory, the home side gave their fans something to cheer about and moved onto six points.

TSS Rovers tied 2-2 at home with Altitude, who are both aiming to fight for the title. The hosts had to twice come from behind in the match and their 88th minute equalizer earned them a share of the spoils.

Men’s leaders Langley United could not make the most of TSS Rovers dropping points on Saturday. Their game ended 1-1 with Unity, and there is still a one-point gap between first and second, with Altitude slightly further away in third.

To conclude, Kamloops enjoyed their Saturday on the road with a 3-0 win against Burnaby. The hosts had looked to be moving closer to the title fight, but the defeat has moved them further away and Kamloops to within one win of their opponents in the standings.
